The Fat Yogini's Journey To Teach Yoga
The reason I am so passionate about Yoga and Body Acceptance is because learning to love my body through the practice of Yoga totally transformed my life.
I still remember the first moment I really experienced the feeling of appreciating my body. I was lying in savasana, the final resting posture of a yoga class, and the disembodied voice of the Yoga Teacher on my television screen instructed me to place my hand on my belly and feel my breath rise and fall. It was the first time I had ever felt so calm and peaceful while touching a part of my body I’d been at war with my entire life. It felt like the most magical thing ever. After learning, through my own experiences, that my body needed a different approach to Yoga, I developed a practice that worked regardless of body shape or size. What a revelation! I ditched the mirrors because my body looks different than all the Yoga models in videos, books, and magazines and learned to tune into my internal awareness of my alignment. I felt like such a rebel, and so liberated! At a certain point, I just knew I had to share this joyful practice with other people in the world. People who, like me, never realized yoga was for THEM, too. I began my training with a series of distance yoga teacher training programs. As I studied, I began connecting with other fat Yoga Teachers around the world. I made some great friends along the way and got even more excited about spreading the word that Yoga is for EVERY body! In 2012, I was blessed with an opportunity to work with a private group from the gay men’s community: self-identified Bears and their friends. Most of these husky guys had never done Yoga before and we were a perfect fit for each other! So I got some great experience teaching and working with a fantastic group of guys, all while continuing to work on my studies. Even though I’ve since graduated from a really amazing local teacher training program, I’m still teaching the Bears today – and I just love them to pieces. Now, my passion is to share this practice of Yoga with you! I can't wait to find out what you will end up teaching me along the way as well. SHOUT OUT! Remember, I LOVE connecting so send me an email and tell me what brought you here! Make sure you also sign up for my newsletter so that you can always be among the first to find out about all the latest Body Positivity Yoga goodies! You can also connect with me on Twitter or on Facebook. See you on the mat! Namaste, P.S. Want to get to know me even better? Check out my blog, Diary of a Fat Yogini!
